He was Shot in the Head. She was Shot While Shielding His Body. They Both Walked Out of the Hospital

During the massacre at the Route 91 Harvest Festival last Sunday night, Michael Gracia, was shot in the head when the gunman began firing on the crowd. He was rushed to the hospital for treatment for the injury and, in just three days’ time, managed to take a walk through the hallways of the facility.

As reported by the Orange County Register, Gracia, a 24-year-old police officer from Ontario, California, took a walk down the hallway of the hospital, holding the hand of his fiancée, Summer Clyburn, and showing “steady signs of improvement” after a bullet hit his head during the shooting in Las Vegas.

Gracia had to undergo surgery to repair some of the damage that occurred after he was shot.

A photo was posted on Twitter by Sgt. Shelisa Williams, a San Bernardino County sheriff’s legislative liaison, that captured the occasion, saying, “Officer Gracia from Ontario Pd, after being shot in the head, is walking #VegasStrong #godisgood.”

In a statement, Ontario Police Sgt. Jeff Higbee said, “Michael is showing steady signs of improvement as time goes on.”

Higbee went on to say, “He was able to get out of the hospital bed and walk the hallways of the hospital today. Thank you for your continued thoughts and prayers for Michael and his family.”

Clyburn was also injured during the shooting at the Route 91 Harvest Festival when she tried to cover Gracia after he was shot. Her injuries were considered not life-threatening.

Jesse Rivera, a friend of Gracia, said of the couple, “The love between those two are real and they are new parents and new parents shouldn’t be going through this.” Rivera set up a GoFundMe page to help support the pair as they recover.

In an updated posted on the fundraising site, Rivera said, “All I want is time to spent with my buddy.” He added, “Thank you all for the support, I know he’s seen it and it means a lot to him and Summer.”

Gracia has since been able to return to Southern California, where he received a warm welcome from family, friends, and fellow officers. He will be staying in a rehab facility while he continues to recover from his injury.
