When a teen approached a California man and asked if he could mow his lawn, the man was surprised to learn the reason he wanted to do it.
Ryan Cox was at his home in Oakdale, California, when 14-year-old Cody Mitschelin showed up at his door, asking to mow Cox’s lawn, reports Today.
Cox was impressed that the teen was so willing to work and wanted to know what he was trying to raise money for. He wrote about the incident in a post on his Facebook page.
“This 14 year old boy came by the house with a lawnmower wanting to mow our lawn for $5,” Cox wrote in his post. “Well…me being a hustler I had to ask this kid why you mowing lawns? He replied with… ‘I’d like to take my girlfriend to lunch tomorrow and I don’t have enough money.’ So we’ve been going door to door getting him business and he busted his ass mowing lawns and sweeping sidewalks and made enough to take her to lunch and get her flowers. I’m so happy this still exists… Hope is still alive for the future generation and our sons and daughters. I’m impressed by whoever is raising this boy, great job!!! Thanks to you guys that also noticed and pitched in on the cause to building our future men!”
Cox told Today, “What Cody did is commendable and sweet. He’s restored faith for his generation.”
Cody said his girlfriend was impressed when she learned he had earned $45 mowing lawns so he could take her out on a date.
Cox’s post quickly went viral and the owner of Safari Pizza, where Cody had planned to take his girlfriend, came across the post and learned about the teen’s plans.
To prepare for their arrival, the restaurant owner set the mood for the couple, laying flowers and candles on the table. To top it all off, the teens’ meal was on the house.
Cody still wanted to use his hard-earned money to buy something for his girlfriend, so after lunch, he took her out for doughnuts and ice cream. He also bought her a baseball hat and some of her favorite candy.
Cody’s mother, Tina Mitschelin, was very proud of what her son did.
“We try and make all six of our kids work for extra cash by doing chores around the house,” she said. “I was really proud to see him show some responsibility.”
Readers shared their thoughts on the story on the Mad World News Facebook page.
“Nice to see a young man willing to earn money and l will bet his parents are awfully proud of their son,” one reader commented. “l am equally proud of the homeowner for going the extra mile to further help him . God bless them both!!”
“What a kid,” another user wrote. “How sweet he wanted to earn money to take his girl for a meal. This good neighbor also had a good heart, not only to help him out but letting others know he wanted to work for his money. Good people do exist, don’t let anyone fool you.”
